   Natural resources.
   When Europeans came close to the Eastern Coast of what is now Canada they found fish stocks that appeared so thick you could pick the cod out of the water by hand.
   Cod stocks had really depleted on the other side of the Atlantic.
   After this came the discovery of the beaver, which had become virtually extinct in Europe because of the fashion industry of the day – beaver hats.
