Trading of shares in UK and internationally?

I would like to know if it’s possible to trade shares in the US whilst residing in the UK. Would I need addresses, registered in the US?

Also may you elaborate on the meaning of the following in ;

equity shares

    There should be no trouble (we are in international markets). It may not be cheap, though. If you are in UK you may find yourself paying commission to UK broker and commission (net dealing price) in US. Most brokers will (should) have facility to convert your GBP to USD.
